About
My name is Andi Benet [they|them], and I’m a lens-based artist working in San Francisco. As an artist, my practice explores perception, identity, and the interplay between them.
From a mixture of hypersensitivity, migraine aura, and synesthesia, my perception of reality is abnormal, ranging from hue shifts to double vision to hallucinations. In my work, I recreate this sensation—seeing and not believing—by distorting captured images via the use of supersaturated lighting, prisms, unusual film stocks, and multiple and long exposures.
Disabled, assigned female, and queer, I use my own body as a tool in performative self-portraiture, as a means to reassert bodily autonomy. I find myself drawn to questions of æsthetic as identity-marker, creating work featuring dreamlike, unreal archetypes.
I believe art belongs to everyone. I advocate for experimentation, a DIY mentality, and the democratization of knowledge. As such, I am documenting my processes and thoughts here.
Love,
Andi
