And I Love

On Jellyfish

“Jellyfish Palace,” 2017 from my very first photography series, Sub Francisco.

Jellyfish seem to be a recurring motif for me.

And, I’ve been thinking about why that is. They weren’t one of my childhood favorite animals.

It really only started after I moved to San Francisco from Colorado. Which given that the Denver Aquarium has tigers in it, maybe it was just I was never exposed to them. Not that I really went to aquariums.

It also coincided my migraines getting worse.

Especially the brain fog.

And I think that’s the attraction. These are creatures drifting. There’s a meditative zen to watching them float, disconnected with the world around them.

Jellyfish can also jolt you.

Okay, technically, it’s venom from a sting.

But, it feels familiar? The pain tends to settle into the background as the brain fog takes over. With the occasional jolt to remind me the migraine is still there.
