I’m trying to get better at actually talking about my works in progress, rather than waiting until I make something note worthy. I’m taking a beginning watercolor class and made this for a Luminous Grays assignment (the emphasis being on a white-dominate, muted color palette).
I’ve been playing with using a projector to copy my digital drafts onto paper (letting there be more variability than if I had traced it directly), but seem to push too hard on my pencil. Think I’m going to try using watercolor pencils the next time. Did finally do some successful glazing using only transparent watercolor paints.
For the subject, I went with the Greek goddess Selênê. Mostly, because when I was thinking of white, the things that pop into my head are "chess queen” and “moon.” I should state right now that I absolutely hate this goddess (although, to be fair, most of the Greco-Roman parthenon seems to be varying degrees of jerkiness).
I hate that the myth we most often associate with her (her affair with the mortal Endymiôn) is portrayed as a beautiful love story. But, it’s not. Endymiôn is trapped in an eternal sleep.
They have 50 daughters in the Mênai… But, he’s not able to consent.
… Should have just done the White Queen through the Looking-Glass. May try to later this week.
